The difference between dividends and interest is very small, not worth worrying about for beginners.  Stocks may pay dividends, which are periodically declared by the directors.  Bonds pay interest, which is written into the terms of the bond.  But if a bond fund has other income as well, the whole thing may be called a dividend.
